The Pivoting Optical Servo (POS) combines high-density magnetic data recording with laser servo guidance to provide an order of magnitude track count increase over previous Super DLTtape® products.
Laser Guided Magnetic Recording (LGMR) combines the best of magnetic and optical recording technologies. Since the optical tracking is on the reverse side, the entire front side of the tape can be used exclusively for data recording only (which is the one factor to realize the high capacity of 1.6TB at 2:1 compression).
Advanced Tape-Slitting Mechanics increase the precision of the “slitting” blades necessary to create the half-inch tape reels from master rolls. This critical quality factor maintains consistent tape edge resulting and ensures smooth tape feed through the drive.
Enhanced high-polymer binder is a unique binders in combination with unique magnetic particles that result in increased durability of tape.

Overview

DDS has become the world standard for storing and backing up computer data on tape, and now you can enjoy even higher capacity, higher output, and higher reliability than ever before. The ATOMM technology used to achieve reliable, high-density recording on compact Fujifilm DDS3 and DDS4 data cartridges has evolved, and the result is a new generation of DAT72-compliant, metal-coated DG5-170M tapes with 36GB capacity (72GB with 2:1 compression) and high reliability.

An ultra-smooth tape surface for exceptionally high output (only DAT72)

When the surface of a tape is uneven, head contact is poor. This ’spacing loss’ results in lower output. Newly evolved Fujifilm ATOMM technology creates an even smoother tape surface than in the past, ensuring improved head contact for consistently high output.

20GB DDS4 - a Huge Leap Forward

Fujifilm’s DDS4 offers up to 20GB of uncompressed storage capacity (40GB compressed) in combination with a drive-dependent maximum transfer rate of 3MB/Second. The secret behind these astonishing figures is:

(1) a new base film which is simultaneously thinner and higher in yield strength, resulting in increased tape in the cartridge with high durability or reliability and

(2) a refinement of the industry-leading ATOMM technology for even finer particles with higher output allowing increased recording density.

A further factor contributing to the DDS-4’s reliability is the innovative 4S (Symmetric Slider Spring Structure) which provides smoother movement of the redesigned high-rigidity cartridge’s slider section. Taken together, these innovations create a huge leap forward in backup and long-term archiving.

Minimal Error Rate, Higher Efficiency

Although 4mm systems have error-correction, avoiding errors in the first place is the best solution. An extremely smooth base film and super-calendering techniques give the magnetic layer a mirror finish to reduce the spacing loss that causes errors. Combined with the tapes’ high output, this results in an extremely low error rate.

Smooth, Stable Transport

Both DDS data cartridges feature SDR (Super Durability and Runnability) backcoating with a very low friction coefficient, assuring smooth transport even with the complex transport modes and mechanisms of these systems. Thanks to their outstanding static resistance, these data cartridges prevent dust accumulation, maintaining their exceptionally low error rate over an extended working life.

With 1.6TB capacity and 240MB/sec transfer rate, HP LTO-4 Ultrium 4 RW and WORM Data Cartridges offer the highest storage capacity and backup performance of any comparable tape technology. It takes just 8.3 seconds to backup 1GB of data to a HP Ultrium 4 cartridge, compared to 12.5 seconds for Ultrium 3 and over 30 seconds for Ultrium 2.
Smoother base film and smaller magnetic particles increase the bit density, allowing more data to be recorded in the same amount of tape. This has enabled the number of recording tracks to increase from 704 for Ultrium 3, to 896 tracks for 4th generation HP LTO-4 Ultrium 1.6TB cartridges. Smoother, thinner basefilm also enables a longer tape to be packed into the same size cartridge shell, contributing to the increased capacity.
Increased margin between Early Warning End of Media (EWEOM) and End of Media (EOM), which means data on a full tape will fit on to the destination tape when copying tapes. This helps to ensure that complete data sets are maintained on single tapes without the need to span multiple cartridges in an archive, greatly simplifying the management of records and stored data.
HP Ultrium media is exhaustively qualified for use with HP and non-HP Ultrium products. A continuous testing program in HP’s media laboratory guarantees the high levels of quality uniquely specified by Hewlett-Packard. HP has 20 custom-built test chambers in use around the clock. 70,000 tests and 1.3 million test hours a year emulate real-world environmental conditions and usage. The goal of all this testing is to ensure that every tape works reliably the first and every time it is loaded into a drive.
HP warrants LTO-4 Ultrium 1.6TB RW and WORM cartridges for up to 30 years archival life and/or 260 full backups. This ensures businesses can meet the ever increasing demands of regulation for data retention and archiving.
LTO-4 tape drives will support Write Once Read Many capability, meaning that data written to tape cannot be altered or tampered with. This provides an archiving solution for the retention of compliant data that meets the requirements of SEC Rule 17a - 4(f), as well as other regulatory requirements like Sarbanes-Oxley Act. WORM media will have distinctly different cartridge colour and the write protect tab will function the same as a read-write cartridge. Although data already written cannot be altered, a WORM cartridge can be appended to full capacity over several sessions.
HP’s LTO-4 tape drives and libraries have the potential to be part of wider data encryption up to FIPS 140-2 level 2. The tape drive on its own is not FIPS 140-2 level 2 but does incorporate AES 256 bit encryption (the highest level of AES) capabilities to provide greater security. HP’s implementation meets the current draft of IEEE1619.1 tape encryption standard.

Overview

The HP StorageWorks LTO-4 Ultrium 1760 Tape Drive, based on fourth-generation LTO technology, is the highest capacity, 1.6 TB compressed per cartridge, fastest performing, 576 GB per hour, half-height tape drive in the StorageWorks family providing hardware data encryption to deliver the ultimate direct attach data protection solution for entry level and for midsized customers. It is available in both SCSI and SAS models.

AES 256-bit hardware data encryption provides easy-to-enable security to protect the most sensitive data and prevent unauthorized access of tape cartridges. By using LTO-4 encryption, not only is data fully capable of being compressed therefore maximizing capacity, encrypted backups are completed without a loss in performance.

The Ultrium 1760 Tape Drive is fully read and write compatible with all fourth - third-generation Ultrium media and offers further investment protection through its backward-read compatibility with second-generation Ultrium media.

HP StorageWorks LTO-4 Ultrium 1840 Tape Drive represents HP’s fourth-generation of LTO tape drive technology positioned as HP’s first tape drive capable of storing up to 1.6 TB per cartridge while providing hardware-based encryption to enable greater levels of security and unprecedented performance.

Data hardware encryption using AES 256-bit provides easy-to-enable security to protect the most sensitive data and prevent unauthorized access of tape cartridges. By using LTO-4 Ultrium 1840 encryption, not only is data fully capable of being compressed therefore maximizing capacity, encrypted backups are completed without a loss in performance.

Capable of data transfer rates up to 240 MB/sec, HP’s exclusive Data Rate Matching feature further optimizes performance by matching host system speed to keep drives streaming and enabling the fastest tape performance in the industry.

The Ultrium 1840 provides investment protection with full read and write support with LTO-3 media, and the ability to read LTO-2 cartridge. By doubling the capacity of previous generation Ultrium drives, HP customers now require fewer data cartridges to meet their storage needs, significantly reducing IT costs and increasing ROI.

Support for Write-Once, Read-Many (WORM) media allows customers to implement a cost-effective solution to secure, manage, and archive data to meet stringent compliance regulations.

The LTO-4 Ultrium 1840 Tape Drive provides both U320 SCSI and 3Gbps SAS interfaces and supports the industry’s most comprehensive list of compatible hardware and software platforms. Each drive option includes HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition backup/recovery software and the HP Data Protector Express Software Bare Metal Disaster Recovery option, as well as support for HP One-Button Disaster Recovery (OBDR) and HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools (L&TT).

The TS2900 is equipped with standard features designed to provide ease-of-use and secured data backup.
